ISTD

For this project, I was challenged by ISTD to fire my audience's imagination through the significance of numbers. Through my research, I made the link between the tempos of electronic dance music genres and their significance to different sub-cultures. As Chase and Status are one of the most recognised names in Drum and Bass music, I used their compelling story of how their ‘Return to Jungle’ album was produced for the content of this book. The numeric structure of Weed and Rum (one of the songs on the 'Return to Jungle' album) has been used to Influence and rule over the layout, structure and editorial design. The name 88.0 is derived from the song's tempo - 88.0 bpm.

IN DANCE MUSIC,
MOST GENRES ARE
WITHIN 10 BPM

Paper

Sun Bleached

As this book tells the story of how Chase and Status found their new sound on a trip to Jamaica, the warm tone of the paper has been selected to feel like it has been sun bleached to reflect the Jamaican climate. The lightweight paper shows the structure of the typographical content and their significance to each other through the pages of the book.

Navigation

Bar.Beat | Hr:Min:Sec

Each page of 88.0 represents a 4-beat musical bar of the song Weed and Rum by Chase and Status. The navigation also uses the exact time in seconds which falls on the specific beat in that column.

Type Specifications

As part of my submission for ISTD, I was tasked with creating some type specifications which outlined in great detail the use of the typography within the 88.0 book.
